Ironweed was launched in 2006 by Act Now Productions. Act Now was founded by Adam Werbach who was elected national president of the Sierra Club when he was an unrepentantly idealistic 23 year old. They produce media, help non-profits communicate their missions, and distribute eco-conscious films. After launching and running Ironweed for eighteen months, Act Now’s mission took a different direction, when Wal-Mart hired Adam and his company for the job of educating employees in environmental awareness and responsibility. Act Now reluctantly searched for a new owner for Ironweed who would continue the Ironweed mission to champion independent movies and filmmakers who ventured into provocative subjects meaningful to the progressive audience they were attempting to reach; subjects like the environment, politics, and social responsibility are paramount in the Ironweed film library.
The new team of partners is led by Matt Marshall, former CEO and founder of Higher Octave Music, a top independent new age and world music record label acquired by EMI in the early 2000’s. Matt’s other business interests include Cyberset www.Cyberset.cc, a digital rights music label with an edgy electronica bent, and a place to download some great dance and arty music. Matt sits on the board of Earthdance www.Earthdance.org, a non-profit organization furthering world peace and cultural diversity through music and dance. One Earthdance event connects people in 300 cities spanning 60 countries every year in September. Matt is also co-founder of 4th Way Fulfillment.
Heading up our film acquisitions area is Laurie Walters, an actress, director, and environmental and political activist. You might recognize Laurie as Joanie from the hit 70’s and 80’s series, Eight is Enough. Besides acting in TV, film and stage, Laurie worked with the wonderful organization, Tree People founded by Andy Lipkis, a contemporary of Act Now’s Adam Werbach.
Sharon Wilson, co- founder of 4th Way Fulfillment, a green order processing and fulfillment company, whose clients have included Self Realization Fellowship, Chaz Dean’s WEN Haircare, and Livity Outernational Organic Clothing, Daily Om, and Love This Life Brand products, in addition to multiple record labels and music websites. Our Web Master is Eric Iverson. While this is his day job, he doubles as Eric-I, the leader of the fabulous Roots Reggae band called Soul Majestic www.soulmajestic.com. They’ve toured nationwide, recorded in Jamaica and continue to perform at some of the worlds largest Music Festivals. When they're not on the road you can generally catch them performing on the West Coast of the US.
